Iceland - Day 5 (Blue Lagoon)

Wednesday, 31 August 2011

Rather than go on a third full day tour, we instead went to the Blue Lagoon for some pampering and relaxation.

The Blue Lagoon is a hot sulphur pool, and whilst powered by natural forces, is man-made.  The water in the lagoon is very good for the skin, so much so that a medical clinic has been set up there for the treatment of skin conditions.

Upon arrival, we received a towel, a bathrobe, a scan bracelet for our lockers and a package with some of their products.

We waded around in the lagoon for awhile and rubbed the sulphuric mud into our skin.

Much to the envy of others, we had pre-booked a facial and massage weeks in advance so we enjoyed some pampering whilst many others made enquiries at the exclusive spa which was booked out.

This is pretty much all we did on this day, but there is something else we should add to our Iceland experience that didn’t seem to fit anywhere else.

On one of our nights in Iceland, we tried some local cuisine.  Traditional Icelandic cuisine includes reindeer, puffin, rams head, horse sausage, whale meat (usually minkh) and rotting shark meat.

We considered for a moment trying whale because unless we go to Japan one day, we would probably not get this opportunity again.  But instead, Jason opted for a reindeer burger and Sarah did not hesitate to settle for puffin.

(Photos will be posted in due course).

Reindeer was rich and gamy.  Puffin was very dark meat and very rich.

Jason wasn’t overly impressed, and Sarah wouldn’t eat puffin again although may reconsider trying whale if the opportunity presented itself again.
